FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: What does this software do?
A: Remote Assistant is a software package designed to help you in providing your customers with better help & support over the Internet or LAN. Remote Assistant operates similar to pcAnywhere or VNC, only it does not require your customers to install and run server/host applications or open ports and have static IP address.

Q: If my customers won't require to open ports or have IP address, then how will I connect to them?
A: Remote Assistant require your customers to initiate the connection, using freeware utility called Remote Host (it is available at download section). You will, however, need to have static of dynamic IP for your customer to connect to your help desk. Your customer will only run Remote Host when he/she needs your assistance without compromising the security of his/her computer. Remote Host doesn't wait for or accept incoming connection, so it doesn't require an IP address or port.

Q: If I have 100 customers how much would it cost to distribute Remote Host application to all of them?
A: Remote Host is free, so... it will cost you nothing! All you have to order is a copy of Remote Assistant, which will run on your computer and accept incoming assistance requests from your customers.

Q: Can Remote Assistant work over a regular phone line, like pcAnywhere?
A: No. Remote Assistant can only connect over TCP/IP protocol, so both you and your customer will have to have internet connection.

Q: I don't have a static IP adress or persistent internet connection. Can I still use Remote Assistant?
A: Yes. All you need is a regular (dial-up) internet connection and a software, that synchronizes your dynamic IP address with the DynDNS service like DynDns.org (see http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns for more details). We can recommend free DynDNS-Updater utility available at www.dyndns.org. DynDNS service will provide you with domain name alias for your dynamic IP address, so your customers will only need to know your DNS alis (which could look like: mycompany.dnsalias.com) in order to connect to your computer when it's online.
