Remote Assistant
Overview
Remote Assistant is designed to help
developers in providing customers with better help & support over the Internet or
LAN. Remote Assistant runs on background in your system tray
minimized. When a remote user (customer) requests assistance
using free Remote Host software (also available at
www.contextsoft.com) Remote Assistant will notify you
by displaying a message box. You will then be able to
chat with the remote user, capture remote computer's screen,
manipulate with the mouse and keyboard and tranfer files
and clipboard content to and from the remote computer.
Remote Assistant software is very simlpe to use and has several
advantages over similar software like pcAnywhere or VNC:
- It requires NO configuration or administration at the
remote site and very little configuration on the assistant site.
- It does not require any ports to be opened on your customer's
computer and therefore presents no security threat.
- It is totally free for your customers. You can distribute
Remote Host software with your application and preconfgure it
so, it will know how to connect to your help desk. All your
customers will need is internet connection. Below you find a
simple code that invokes RemoteHost.exe with the parameters.
- It is very small and is easy to download and install.
- It allows several customers to connect to your computer
at the same time.
Setting up Remote Assistant
In order for your customers to be able to connect to your
computer for assistance you will need either static IP
address or dynamic IP address registered with one of the
DynDNS services. I can recommend free DynDNS.org.
You will find more information at:
http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns
Remote Assistant software by default uses port 1975 for all
incoming connections. If you would like to modify that,
start Remote Assistant (or double click on the icon in the
system tray if it is already started). Press "Stop" button
to stop the listener, modify port number and press "Start"
button again. At this point the configuration is saved
(in the RemoteAdmin.cfg file located next to the executable)
and will be enforced every time when you start Remote Assistant.
Make sure to let your customers know if you have changed the
default port value.
Normally, a shortcut to the Remote Assistant is copied
into user's startup folder under Start/Programs menu, so
the program starts automatically every time you log into your
computer.
Remote Host Software
Your customers will need Remote Host in order to contact your
help desk running Remote Assistant. Remote Host is freeware
and is available for free download at the download
section of this website.
You can freely distribute Remote Host with your application
or alone without any royalties free of charge. You can
post links to Remote Host and even publish Remote Host
on your web site for others to download. However, you are
prohibited from charging, or requesting donations, for
distributing it.
Trial version of Remote Assistant is available now for free download.
